Grant Denyer Wrap Up – Queensland Raceway Fujitsu Round

Grant Denyer finished 11th overall in his V8 Supercar comeback at Queensland Raceway last weekend. Driving for Kelly Racing in the Crimsafe/Summit Fleet Leasing Holden, the SEVEN TV presenter used the Queensland round as a test bed before driving in October’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

“I have been out of a racecar for nearly 2 years, so was pretty rusty during the first few sessions. It was fantastic to be back in seat, and I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. We thought anywhere near the top 10 would be an acceptable result given my lack of recent track time, driving a Holden for the first time, and with a new team and engineer,” Grant explained.

After qualifying 22rd in the 28 car field, Grant had a strong race to finish 16th in Race 1.

Race 2 on Sunday morning was held in torrential rain, and after a great start, Grant picked up 9 places to be running in the top 7 at the end of the first lap.

“It was very difficult to assess the grip level, and with so many spearing off, I decided to be conservative and make sure we finished the race. I lost a couple of spots when I dropped a wheel off in the mud, so I was happy to finish up 10th.”

The Crimsafe/Summit Fleet Leasing Holden lined up 13th on the grid for the final 22 lap race on Sunday afternoon, after a further dump of rain in the middle of the previous race.

“A dry line had appeared on the circuit, however it was right down the outside of the starting grid, and all cars that lined up on the inside for the race start were still on a wet track. My rear wheels were actually sitting in a puddle, so when the lights went off, all those on the dry line bolted, and I was still wheel spinning with only 4% of throttle!”

Grant dropped to last off the race start, however clawed his way back to 14th by the end of the race, securing 11th overall for the round.

“Our objective was to get some valuable track time before driving the Shannon’s Supercar Showdown entry in the Bathurst 1000. This entry is part of a national television reality show on 7Mate; giving the lucky winner a chance to drive at Bathurst with me, in what is really the experience of a lifetime.”

Two of the 3 races from Queensland Raceway were televised live on the 7 Network last weekend, while all the highlights will be replayed this weekend on Seven, Saturday, 23rd August between 12.30 and 1.30 pm.
